Seven Tips for Gardeners

As the snow begins to melt, many gardeners are giddy with excitement to start digging around in the dirt. Gardening can be advantageous, but it can also come with the associated risks of aches and pains.

Here are a few tips to help you maximize your joy of gardening while minimizing the risk of pain:

Warm-up. Be sure to take the time to warm up your muscles before you start. By implementing a stretching regime, you can prepare your body for new movements.
Take breaks. Set a timer and take a break every 15-20 minutes to stand up, stretch and walk around.
Drink water. When you take your break every 15-20 minutes, have a drink of water, too.
Breathe. Oxygenating breaths to nourish your hard-working muscles and help to improve circulation. When breathing deeply, you should see your abdomen extend out and then in calmly.
Listen to your body. If you feel a twinge, take a break or change positions.
Be mindful of substantial loads. Divide large loads into smaller batches that are easier to handle. Use a wheelbarrow for assistance.

Gardening can be a lot of work, but it’s also a great source of pleasure and beauty, all the more so when you feel in top physical condition!
