Are Standing Desks a Good Idea?

The introduction of standing desks has taken the workplace by storm with promises of weight loss, improved posture and better focus. However, sitting for extended periods is proven to cause long-term health problems and aches and pains. In comparison, standing for long periods can also contribute to foot and ankle pain.

Don't despair! Standing desks aren't all bad news! These unique workstations can help reduce shoulder, arm and back pain, assuming you incorporate the proper body mechanics.

Getting the most out of your standing (and sitting) desk.

Use proper sitting and standing posture. Natural tendencies to hunch over or hyper-arch our lower back can occur when we sit or stand for a long time. This can be attributed to poor body mechanics, bad posture or even caused by an unsupportive office chair.

Wear shoes that support your back. Proper footwear is essential for everyday health, especially if you plan on using a standing desk during the day. Appropriate cushioning, and arch support help you to maintain your balance and minimize pain in your feet. If you often wear high heels to work, be sure to bring a pair of comfortable flats to change into at your desk. Standing in high heels for more than a couple hours a day can contribute to pain in your feet and ankles, as well as cause severe aches and pains in your spine.

Get up and MOVE. Infrequent stretch breaks and limited movement throughout the day can create back pain. Make a point of taking a break every 30 minutes or so by either going for a walk outside or around your office. Set yourself a reminder to refill your water jug and utilize this task to stretch your muscles. These small activities help get your blood flowing and give you a boost of energy.

Eating a balanced diet combined with drinking enough water and getting enough sleep at night = a happy and healthy spine for years to come!
