Just Like Riding a Bike

Cycling as a way of transportation or just for enjoyment is an excellent way to keep in shape. But having a sore back can you prevent you from enjoying this favourite outdoor activity. Various factors can cause back pain or discomfort while riding a bicycle such as a poorly fit or wrong-sized bike, poor riding posture, or even pain from a pre-existing injury.

Cycling, in particular, requires some conditioning and adaptation. If you're new to this sport, you may want to do some research before strapping on your helmet. Pay close attention to any recurrent or prolonged back pain during or after cycling. If you start to experience back pain, be sure to consult Dr. Vollrath for a prompt assessment and treatment. By getting some simple adjustments made, you can continue with enjoying leisurely bike rides, prevent injury or prevent existing damage from progressing to a more severe problem.

Often, simple fixes such as adjusting your bike seat or correcting your posture could help tremendously. We have compiled several helpful tips:

1. Take it easyBe careful not to overdo it. On long rides, make sure to take breaks as needed, hydrate and do some stretches.

2. Find the right fit for your needsThere is a bike for every rider whether you are interested in touring, road racing or all-terrain cycling. Make sure you have a bike that suits your needs. When you purchase a new bike or take your existing bike in for maintenance, ensure you ask to have your bike properly fitted to your frame.

3. PostureDuring your bike ride, keep a neutral spine by bending at the hips. Avoid the "hunch" in your mid-back. Try to avoid excessive movement from your upper body and use your back as a lever instead.

4. Core StrengthWell-conditioned abdominal and back muscles often help to support your upper body while riding and minimize excessive swaying. Dr. Vollrath can recommend exercises that are targeted to your core, as well as exercises to enhance your overall conditioning.

5. Adjust your bike to your frameMinor adjustments can make a massive difference as different styles of bikes require different riding postures. By undergoing general adjustments, this can help to ensure a relaxed, comfortable position while riding your bicycle.

Dr. Vollrath is here to make sure that the discomfort of back pain does not keep you from enjoying time outside riding your bike. Book an adjustment with Dr. Vollrath at Core Chiropractic Center today!
