How To Relieve Tension in Jaw: 3 Movements for Temporary TMJ Relief

Do you suffer from tension or pain in your jaw? Do you have a headache from clenching or grinding your teeth at night? At Core Chiropractic, we know how debilitating tension in your jaw from TMJ can be.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, a long-term solution is likely needed to address the root of the problem. In the meantime, you need relief. Here are some things you can try.

Self TMJ Massage & TMJ Exercises

Chin Tucks

      Stand or sit tall

Tuck your chin back and create a double

Hold the tucked chin position for 3-5 seconds and repeat for as many sets as necessary

Chin Tucks is a stretch like any other. The longer you hold it along with routine performance will work to add strength and flexibility to your jaw. Which may add relief to TMJ disorders.

Jaw Relaxation

Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth just behind your upper front teeth

Repeatedly open and close your mouth

Focus on a slow and controlled opening and closing of your mouth. Let the relaxation be natural

This movement is good to combat the tension that can build up in your jaw and relax the muscles. Complete the movement as many times as required until you begin to feel relief

Mouth Resistance

Place your thumb under your chin

Open your mouth slowly, as wide as you’re able to

Keep your thumb under your chin the whole time and as you open your mouth push into your chin to add resistance.

This movement will help to strengthen your jaw since you are providing resistance to the muscles.
